What the TC001 is, and what the Amazon summary says about setup

The Ulanzi TC001 is the pixel clock the smart-home community standardised on: 8x32 WS2812 LEDs (256 pixels) in a 200.6 x 70.3 x 31.9 mm body with a 4,400 mAh battery good for about 5 hours, USB-C, a buzzer, and light, temperature and humidity sensors. It costs $45.99 at ulanzi.com and ₹7,790 on Amazon.in through Tektonic India, the only ready-made pixel clock we found on sale in India. The stock firmware does a clock, weather, a pomodoro timer, a stopwatch, a scoreboard and YouTube, TikTok and Instagram counts through Ulanzi's phone app, which needs no account.

Its real value is that Ulanzi officially lists AWTRIX and Home Assistant as supported, and the ESP32 inside can be flashed over USB-C without soldering. Reviewers call it compact, bright, retro and a blank 256-pixel canvas. The complaints: Amazon's review summary says the setup process receives criticism for being very complicated and the buttons are hard to understand; owners report the glued-in battery is hard to replace, the temperature sensor reads high because the ESP32 heats it, the stock weather source does not cover locations outside China, the AWTRIX simulator can lag, and it is only 256 pixels.

What Perchi Matrix is

Perchi Matrix (₹4,499 including GST) is a connected LED desk display built from 8x8 WS2812B panels, 24x8 at launch, driven by an ESP32-S3 running Perchi OS. You pair it from a browser in under a minute with a 6-digit code shown on the LEDs, then install apps from a library of 70+: YouTube subscribers, GitHub stars and Actions, Vercel deploys, Razorpay payments, Stripe and Shopify sales, a calendar countdown, weather, a desk pet. Thirty-seven of them work with zero setup beyond a handle or a location. Every app is styled per app with pixel-exact previews, and 14 celebration effects fire the moment a webhook lands.

For makers there is a no-code builder, a REST API, webhooks with 15 provider presets, an MCP server for AI assistants, an SDK and CLI, and the authenticated AWTRIX-3-compatible local API with MQTT and Home Assistant discovery; see Developers. Updates are signed and roll back automatically. The 32x8, 64x16 and 64x32 sizes run the same firmware and open later on the waitlist; see sizes.

AWTRIX 3 is archived: what that means for both

AWTRIX 3, the firmware that made the TC001 famous, is archived upstream: no new releases and no issue support. Its successor, AWTRIX NG, is a from-scratch rewrite with an API that is not compatible with AWTRIX 3, a PolyForm Noncommercial licence, authentication off by default and manual .bin updates. A TC001 owner today chooses between a frozen AWTRIX 3, a migration to NG that rewrites every automation, or ESPHome.

Perchi Matrix keeps the AWTRIX 3 surface alive: an authenticated subset of the local API (notify, custom apps, switch, settings, power, indicators) and the same MQTT topics with Home Assistant discovery, so existing Home Assistant and Node-RED flows keep working with a company behind them. It does not implement the AWTRIX NG API. The details are on Perchi Matrix vs AWTRIX and the definition on what an AWTRIX-compatible display is.

Home Assistant on each

A flashed TC001 appears in Home Assistant through AWTRIX's MQTT discovery, or through ESPHome if you go that way; either path needs a flash and a YAML or MQTT setup. Perchi Matrix turns up as a light, a text entity, an app selector and sensors through MQTT discovery in bearer mode, with no flashing; the Home Assistant app page lists the entities and the rest_command recipe.

Price in India against the US

In the US the TC001 is the cheaper device by a wide margin, with a battery and a buzzer that Perchi Matrix lacks, and the DIY community's default advice is to buy a TC001 and flash it. In India the order flips: the TC001 lands at ₹7,790 through an importer and Perchi Matrix is ₹4,499 including GST, sold direct with a GST invoice, a 12-month warranty serviced in India and Shiprocket delivery. See Pricing for what is in the box.

When Perchi Matrix is not the right fit

If you need portability, the TC001 has a battery and Perchi Matrix needs a 5 V supply. If you want AWTRIX NG's on-device Berry scripting, Perchi Matrix does not run it. If you want the cheapest possible pixel clock and you are buying in dollars, the TC001 with free firmware is that, and flashing it is part of the fun for many owners.

Questions about Perchi Matrix vs Ulanzi TC001

Does the Ulanzi TC001 work with Home Assistant?

Yes, after flashing: AWTRIX adds MQTT auto-discovery and ESPHome is the other route; Ulanzi itself lists Home Assistant integration. Perchi Matrix appears through MQTT discovery out of the box, with no flashing, as a light, a text entity, an app selector and sensors.

Can I use the TC001 without its battery?

Owners do remove the glued-in 4,400 mAh battery and run the clock from USB-C alone; the vendor spec assumes the battery is present. Perchi Matrix has no battery by design and runs from a 5 V supply.

Does the TC001 need flashing to be useful?

Its stock firmware covers a clock, weather, a pomodoro timer and follower counts through Ulanzi's app, and reviewers find the setup complicated. AWTRIX is the reason most people buy it, and that means flashing. Perchi Matrix arrives with 70+ apps and needs no flashing.

Which has more pixels, the TC001 or Perchi Matrix?

The TC001: 256 pixels (8x32) against 192 (24x8) at Perchi Matrix's launch size. The 32x8, 64x16 and 64x32 Perchi Matrix sizes run the same firmware and open later on the waitlist.

Which is cheaper in India, the TC001 or Perchi Matrix?

Perchi Matrix, at ₹4,499 including GST sold direct, against ₹7,790 for the TC001 on Amazon.in through an importer on 2026-09-18. In the US the TC001 is the cheaper device.

Does the TC001 have a buzzer?

Yes, along with light, temperature and humidity sensors. Perchi Matrix has no buzzer and no sensors; it is silent by design, and celebrations are animations on the LEDs.
