Shells
Perchi shells: Classic at launch, Cat ears and Robot to follow
Perchi's body is a printed shell over the same electronics: a 0.96-inch OLED and capacitive touch designed to work through 2 to 3 mm of PLA or PETG. Perchi comes in the Classic shell at launch; Cat ears and Robot follow later. The print files are to be published under an open licence; they are not published yet.
Which shell comes with Perchi at launch?
The Classic. It is the only shell in the box for the first batches, and the only one you can reserve. Cat ears and Robot are concepts that follow later, with no date; the two drawings below show the idea, not a finished product.
- PERCHI
Classic
Launch shellThe shell in every box for the first batches: a small wedge with a phone lip on the back and the screen on the front. Warm, plain, and the shape every other shell is measured against.
- PERCHI
Cat ears
Concept, follows laterThe Classic with two ears above the screen. A concept today: the drawing is illustrative, and the shell follows later with no date set.
- PERCHI
Robot
Concept, follows laterA squarer body with an antenna. Also a concept: same electronics, same face, a different silhouette, and it follows the Classic once the files are ready.
What is a shell, exactly?
A shell is Perchi's printed body: 2 to 3 mm of PLA or PETG over one set of electronics. The 0.96-inch 128x64 OLED sits behind a window in the front, the 3 touch electrodes under the head and the 1 phone electrode on the back sense through the plastic, and USB-C leaves at the rear. Change the shell and nothing else changes.
The interface every shell respects
- Back rest
- Designed around a 65 to 70 degree rest with a 6 mm lip, so a phone rests without sliding
- Wall over the electrodes
- 2 to 3 mm of PLA or PETG; touch and phone sensing are designed to work through it
- Screen window
- A 0.96-inch 128x64 monochrome OLED behind the front face
- Power
- USB-C at the rear, 5 V, no battery
- Feet
- Anti-slip feet on the base
What stays the same in every shell
- Touch
- Designed around 3 head electrodes and 1 back electrode (final count after the hardware bench pass)
- Sensitivity
- A 0 to 100 slider in the dashboard, 50 = factory, to tune touch for a shell without reflashing
- Face
- One parametric face with 10 moods; the shell does not change it
- Dimensions and weight
- Published after the bench pass
The rest angle and the lip are what make Perchi a phone stand first and a companion second: the phone leans on the back, its weight sits on the lip, and the back electrode reads it through the wall. How that starts a focus block is on the Phone Nap page.
The print files, and the licence we are choosing
That is the plan: the files for all 3 shells are to be published under an open licence, and we are choosing between CC BY 4.0 and CC BY-SA 4.0. They are not published yet, and nothing on this site is a download link. The circuit board and firmware are not part of that plan; firmware updates arrive signed and are installed by the device itself.
Publishing the shells is how we would like people to make Perchi their own without opening it: print a body and keep the electronics. It also answers the question makers ask before buying anything with a printed part: what happens when I want a different colour. When the files are out this page will carry them, with the licence text and the print settings we used.
What you own on day one is described on the security page: keys generated on the device, signed updates, and an authenticated local API and MQTT that keep working on your LAN.
Printing at home or at a print shop in India
When the files are out, any FDM printer that handles PLA or PETG can print a shell. Keep the walls at the 2 to 3 mm the electronics are designed for: thicker walls over the head and back plate weaken the touch reading, thinner ones let light through. Without a printer, print shops in most Indian cities print from a file you bring.
MATERIAL
PLA is the easy print; PETG holds up better to warmth and knocks. Both are what the touch layer is designed around, at 2 to 3 mm.
FIT
The lip, the rest angle, the USB-C opening and the screen window are the parts to leave as designed. Everything else, colour, texture, ears, is yours.
TUNING
After a swap, run the 0 to 100 sensitivity slider in the dashboard and the calibration step from setup: boop three times, rest and lift your phone once.
Will there be more shells?
A community gallery for shells other people design, and small hand-printed drops from us, are planned and not built. Face packs are not built either: Perchi's face is one parametric face with 10 moods, the same in every shell, and the moods come from what happens on your desk rather than from a theme.
If you want to build against the device rather than around it, the REST API, webhooks, MCP server and the local API are on the developers page. What the warranty covers, and how to claim it by serial number, is on the warranty page.
Questions about shells
Can I 3D print my own Perchi shell?
That is the plan, and not yet the reality. The print files for the Classic, Cat ears and Robot shells are to be published under an open licence; today Perchi comes in the Classic shell and there is nothing to download. When the files are out, any printer that handles PLA or PETG at 2 to 3 mm walls can print one.
Will the shell print files be free?
Yes. They are to be published under an open licence; we are choosing between CC BY 4.0 and CC BY-SA 4.0. The circuit board and the firmware are not part of that plan.
Does touch work through a printed shell?
It is designed to: the 3 head electrodes and the back plate that senses the phone are laid out to read through 2 to 3 mm of plastic, and a 0 to 100 sensitivity slider in the dashboard adjusts the thresholds for a particular shell. Final tuning happens at the hardware bench pass, so we do not print latency or accuracy figures yet.
Can I buy a Cat ears or Robot shell later?
They are planned to follow the Classic, and the drawings on this page are concepts, not products. There is no date and no price yet; when either exists we will say so here and on the Perchi page.
Can I change Perchi's face?
Not as a face pack: Perchi has one parametric face with 10 moods, and seasonal or alternative eye sets are not built. What you can change is the mood: any automation, webhook or Home Assistant state can set it for 1 second to 1 hour through the mood command.
