Smart home app

Home Assistant on your desk display

Perchi Matrix works with Home Assistant 3 ways: MQTT discovery creates a light, a text entity, an app selector and sensors (Wi-Fi signal, uptime); the AWTRIX-3-compatible local HTTP API on your LAN accepts rest_command calls in bearer mode; and the Home Assistant value app accepts any sensor pushed by an automation. Any automation can also set Perchi's mood.

What it shows

What does the Home Assistant value app show?

Show any Home Assistant sensor or state, pushed by a rest_command automation, plus MQTT discovery and an authenticated AWTRIX-3-compatible local API on your LAN.

The Home Assistant value app shows one entity pushed by a Home Assistant automation: a number with its unit (21.5 °C, 63 %), or a state such as on, open or home as text. Home Assistant sends the state with a rest_command to the app's webhook URL, so nothing is exposed to the internet and no Home Assistant token leaves your home; the platform never contacts Home Assistant.

MQTT discovery is the second way. Turn on the MQTT broker under the display's Local API settings and Home Assistant creates a light for power and brightness, a text entity that shows a notification, a select entity for the current app, and sensors for Wi-Fi signal and uptime. The display publishes its stats every 60 seconds and its availability on a status topic, and listens on custom, notify, switch, settings and power topics with the same bodies as the HTTP endpoints.

The third way is the local HTTP API on your LAN: an authenticated subset of the AWTRIX 3 API at http://mx-<id>.local, which Home Assistant's rest_command calls in bearer mode. It is off by default, an Admin or Owner turns it on per display and sees the token once, it answers up to 30 requests a second and holds up to 8 local apps in memory. Home Assistant cannot sign HMAC requests, so leave signed mode off for it; it is plain HTTP, trusted on your LAN and refused from any browser origin or foreign host name.

Any automation can also set Perchi's mood for 1 second to 1 hour with the mood.set command, so a door sensor, a calendar or a washing machine can make the face curious, sleepy or proud.

How it connects

What do you need to connect Home Assistant value?

Paste a webhook URL. A rest_command in Home Assistant for the value app; MQTT broker details for discovery; the local API token for rest_command on the LAN.

A webhook only ever flows one way, from the provider to MyPerchi: the provider signs each delivery with the secret you set, duplicates are answered and ignored, and the delivery log keeps 7 days of history. The developers page covers presets, filters and limits.

Speed

How fast does Home Assistant value update?

Pushed, not polled: a rest_command or an MQTT message changes the display within a second. The display publishes its stats on MQTT every 60 seconds, and the local API answers up to 30 requests a second.

Style

How does Home Assistant value look on the matrix?

The value app draws the number with its unit and a label, an icon beside the value, or the state as text; every style option applies. Through the local API you send notify and custom bodies in AWTRIX 3's own format, with text, icon, colour, progress and draw keys, so existing scenes carry over.

The preview at the top of this page is the default Home Assistant value scene on a 24x8 Perchi Matrix, reading 21. The apps page explains how freshness badges work, and the Perchi Matrix page lists every font, colour and effect in the style panel.

On Perchi

What does Perchi do with Home Assistant value?

Perchi shows a pushed value as a card beside its face, and mood.set lets any automation change the face itself for 1 second to 1 hour: a door opening makes it curious, quiet hours make it sleepy.

A moment is Perchi's reaction to a real event: the face changes mood first, then a small card with the value slides in beside it and the face returns. Moments queue three deep, never interrupt a Phone Nap stage change, and wait silently during a block when do-not-disturb is on (the default). See which real events Perchi celebrates and how Phone Nap works.

Setup

Set up Home Assistant value in three steps

Everything happens in the web dashboard from any browser; there is no app to install on your phone and no account wall before the first pixel.

  1. STEP 1

    Install the value app

Install Home Assistant value and add an automation with a token header targeting it. It shows the URL and token.

  2. STEP 2

    Copy the rest_command

Paste the recipe into your Home Assistant configuration and call it from an automation with the entity's state.

  3. STEP 3

Turn on MQTT or the local API

Under the display's Local API settings, enter your broker for discovery, or turn on the local API in bearer mode for rest_command on the LAN.

Honest limits

Where does Home Assistant value stop?

What the provider, the hardware or our own roadmap does not allow yet, stated before you reserve rather than after.

Questions about Home Assistant value

Specific to this app. The general questions (do I need an app, does it work offline, what does a reservation cost) live on the pages that own them.

Does the Home Assistant integration need the cloud?

No. MQTT discovery and the local HTTP API run entirely on your LAN between Home Assistant and the display; only the Home Assistant value app goes through MyPerchi's webhook, and you can skip it and use rest_command on the local API instead.

Is the local API on by default?

No. An Admin or Owner turns it on per display under Settings, Local API, chooses bearer or signed mode, and sees the token exactly once. The token works only for that display's local API and can be rotated or turned off at any time.

Can Home Assistant use signed requests?

No. Home Assistant cannot compute the HMAC signature, so with Require signed requests on, its HTTP calls and the command entities from MQTT discovery are refused. Turn signed mode off for Home Assistant and use the bearer token; put the MQTT leg on mqtts:// with broker credentials.

Do my AWTRIX 3 automations work on Perchi Matrix?

Most do. The display implements the AWTRIX 3 endpoints /api/notify, /api/notify/dismiss, /api/custom, /api/apps, /api/switch, /api/nextapp, /api/previousapp, /api/settings, /api/indicator1 to 3, /api/power and /api/stats, plus the matching MQTT topics, with the same text, icon, colour, progress, bar, draw and lifetime keys; it adds a token, which AWTRIX 3 did not require. /api/screen is not supported and answers 501. AWTRIX layouts assume 32x8, so a 24x8 display cuts off the last 8 columns.

Does it work with ESPHome or WLED?

No. Perchi Matrix runs Perchi OS, its own firmware with signed updates, and is not an ESPHome or WLED device. It appears in Home Assistant through MQTT discovery and answers rest_command on the local API instead.

Can Home Assistant change Perchi's face?

Yes. The mood.set device command sets Perchi's mood (curious, sleepy, proud, love and the rest) for 1 second to 1 hour, so any Home Assistant automation, a doorbell or a calendar can change the face.

Does Perchi Matrix support Home Assistant MQTT discovery?

Yes. With the MQTT broker turned on under Local API, Home Assistant discovers a light (power and brightness), a text entity for notifications, a select entity for the current app and sensors for Wi-Fi signal and uptime, with no YAML.
