Countdown on your desk

The Countdown app counts down on Perchi Matrix from a duration you set (25 minutes by default, 1 second to 24 hours) or to a date and time, and plays fireworks when it reaches zero. The device does the counting, so a countdown keeps running when the internet drops. Save the app again to restart it.

What it shows

What does the Countdown app show?

A timer that counts down on the display, from 1 second to 24 hours or to a date and time, counted by the device so it keeps running offline.

Save the app with a duration and the display counts down from that moment: 25 minutes by default, anything from 1 second to 24 hours. Set a date and time instead and it counts down to that moment, as days, hours and minutes, which turns the display into a days-until counter for an exam, a launch or a trip. Saving the app again restarts it.

The counting happens on the device, not on a server, so the countdown keeps running when the internet drops and never jumps when it comes back. Reaching zero raises a countdown.done event that plays fireworks with DONE by default; pick any of the 14 effects or a text of your own.

Several countdowns can share a display, each its own installation in the playlist, up to 32 apps. For a focus session with a fixed length, the Focus timer app is the same countdown with a pomodoro default; for a meeting, the Next event app reads the time from your calendar instead of asking you to type it.

How it connects

What do you need to connect Countdown?

No account needed. Nothing. A duration, or a date and time.

No sign-in, no key, no account with the provider. It is one of the 37 apps in the no-account list, so it works from the minute the display is paired.

Speed

How fast does Countdown update?

Continuous, on the device: the display redraws the remaining time every second without a server. Nothing to poll and nothing to go stale.

Style

How does Countdown look on the matrix?

The countdown template draws the remaining time in orange (the default colour), in the tiny font at 24x8 so minutes and seconds fit, or days when the target is far away. Zero plays fireworks with DONE by default; both are editable, and a threshold can turn the last minute red.

The preview at the top of this page is the default Countdown scene on a 24x8 Perchi Matrix, reading 12D. The apps page explains how freshness badges work, and the Perchi Matrix page lists every font, colour and effect in the style panel.

On Perchi

What does Perchi do with Countdown?

On Perchi the countdown is a card beside the face; for a focus session Perchi has its own timer, Phone Nap, which starts when your phone rests on it.

A moment is Perchi's reaction to a real event: the face changes mood first, then a small card with the value slides in beside it and the face returns. Moments queue three deep, never interrupt a Phone Nap stage change, and wait silently during a block when do-not-disturb is on (the default). See which real events Perchi celebrates and how Phone Nap works.

Setup

Set up Countdown in three steps

Everything happens in the web dashboard from any browser; there is no app to install on your phone and no account wall before the first pixel.

  1. STEP 1

    Install Countdown

From the no-account list. It appears in the playlist at once.

  2. STEP 2

Set a duration or a date

A duration counts from the moment you save; a date and time counts down to that moment.

  3. STEP 3

    Pick the done effect

Fireworks with DONE by default; choose another of the 14 effects or your own text.

Honest limits

Where does Countdown stop?

What the provider, the hardware or our own roadmap does not allow yet, stated before you reserve rather than after.

Questions about Countdown

Specific to this app. The general questions (do I need an app, does it work offline, what does a reservation cost) live on the pages that own them.

Can the countdown show days until a date?

Yes. Set a date and time instead of a duration and the display counts down to that moment in days, then hours and minutes as it gets close, which makes it a days-until counter for exams, launches and trips. Dates up to the year 2100 are accepted.

Does the countdown keep running offline?

Yes. The device counts down by itself, so a dropped internet connection changes nothing; the countdown keeps going and the done effect still plays at zero.

What happens when the countdown reaches zero?

The display plays fireworks with DONE (or the effect and text you choose) and then shows zero until you restart it or the playlist moves to the next app. Perchi Matrix has no speaker, so there is no alarm sound.

How long can a countdown be?

A duration runs from 1 second to 24 hours; a countdown to a date and time runs as long as you like, up to the year 2100. The default is 25 minutes.

How do I restart the countdown?

Save the app again. A duration countdown starts from the moment you save, so changing any setting restarts it; a countdown to a date simply keeps counting to that date.

Can I run several countdowns on one display?

Yes. Each countdown is its own installation in the playlist, and a display holds up to 32 apps, so an exam date and a tea timer can take turns.
