What is a desk companion?

A desk companion is a small, always-on device that sits on a desk and reacts to the person working there, rather than a robot that performs or a display that only shows numbers; Perchi is a desk companion whose reaction is tied to where your phone is. On Perchi that reaction shows on a 128x64 OLED face.

What makes a device a desk companion?

Three things, and all 3 have to be true. It is always on and lives on the desk, plugged in rather than charged. It reacts to the person there, not to a script. And it does not perform on its own: no servos, no voice, nothing that asks for your attention when you did not give it.

Perchi meets the definition in a specific way: its reaction is tied to where your phone is. Rest the phone on its back and a 25-minute focus block starts while Perchi knits a scarf beside its face; lift the phone and it pauses with a disappointed look. Between blocks it reacts to real events from the accounts you connect, 60+ integrations shared with Perchi Matrix: a sale, a new subscriber, a green build. Nothing on it is random.

How is it different from a desk robot, a desk pet or a pixel display?

The 4 terms get used for each other in shop listings. They describe different objects with different jobs: a robot performs, a pet is looked after, a display shows, a companion reacts. The gap in price between a robot with servos and a companion without them is large; the comparison pages carry the dated numbers.

Desk companion
Sits still, stays on, and answers you: a touch, a phone resting on it, a real event from an account you own. Perchi has no motors, speaker or camera, so the whole reaction happens on the face.
Desk robot
Moves and performs: servos, a speaker, often a camera and a cloud AI. Eilik, EMO, LOOI and Vector are the names people search for. It entertains on its own schedule; a companion waits for yours.
Desk pet
A toy you look after: feed it, clean it, keep it alive, in the Tamagotchi tradition. A companion is not kept alive by you; it reacts to what you do.
Pixel display
Shows numbers and text on LEDs: a subscriber count, the next meeting, a build status. Perchi Matrix and the Ulanzi TC001 are pixel displays. They show; they do not react to you.

The two products on this site sit on opposite sides of that line. Perchi is the companion; Perchi Matrix is the pixel display. They share one dashboard and one app library, and which one is for you depends on whether your phone or your numbers are the thing you want on the desk.

No AI, no camera, no microphone

A companion needs to notice you, and touch, a phone on its back and real events from your accounts are enough to notice. Perchi has no camera, no microphone and no AI; raw touch and phone-presence readings never leave the device, and the face has 10 moods that each have a cause.

That is also why a companion can be silent, with no battery to charge and no subscription for anything it does. The full argument, including what we gave up, is in Why Perchi has no AI; what the device sends and keeps is on the security page.

Questions about desk companions

Is a desk companion the same as a desk robot?

No. A desk robot moves and performs: servos, a speaker, often a camera and a cloud AI. A desk companion sits still and reacts to you. Perchi is a companion: its only moving part is the face on its screen.

Does a desk companion need AI?

No. Perchi has no AI, no microphone and no camera. Its face is parametric, with 10 moods, and every change of mood has a cause you can name: a boop, a phone resting on its back, a payment, a green build, a message from a friend.

What is the difference between a desk companion and a desk pet?

A desk pet is a toy you care for: it needs feeding, cleaning or attention to stay well. A desk companion responds to your work instead. Perchi knits, grows or builds something while your phone rests on it; nothing on it dies when you are away.

Is Perchi a desk companion or a phone stand?

Both, and the second is what makes the first useful: the phone lip on Perchi's back is where the focus block starts. With phone-start switched off it is a plain stand with a face that still reacts to touch and to moments from your apps.
